Abstract:

Aim and Background: High prevalence of borderline personality disorder and its harmful social, health and economic consequences highlights the importance of studying this disorder and its underlying factors. The present study aimed to investigating Behavioral-brain systems of individuals with borderline disorder and its discriminative aspects of these systems in patients and healthy controls. Methods and Materials: Thus 30 patients who admitted to Razi Hospital (Tabriz, Iran), completed the Behavioral inhibition system (BIS), Behavioral activation system (BAS) questionnaire by Carver and White (BIS/BAS scales). Control group consisted of 30 subjects without any mental disorder history.Findings: Results from multi-variant regression analysis showed that the two groups had statistically significant differences in BAS, BIS and sensation seeking scale (P<0.01). Among these factors, sensation seeking scale with Wilks’ lambda=0.42 and BAS with Wilks’ lambda=0.53 had statistically significant role in discrimination between the two groups. Conclusions: Hyperactivity of BIS caused a permanent anxiety and negative emotions experienced by borderline patients and hyperactivity of BAS could be the underlying reason of impulsivity, which is the core component of borderline personality disorder. According to other studies in the field of bio-neural factors effects in development of borderline personality disorder, this study can help to improve our understanding of disorder and therefore help to improve developing accurate methods to predict the possibility of disorder. In addition, it will help us to develop methods for primary prevention and developing more effective therapy methods.

Abstract:

Background: Study of personality can help to explanation of pathology in mental disorders. The aim of this study was to examine major depressive disorder (MDD) based on revisedreinforcement sensitivity theory (r-RST). Materials and Methods: Forty-five patients with MDD along with 45 healthy individuals as a control group participated in the present study. Following the informed consent form, Structured Clinical Interview (SCID-I), General Intelligence Test (SGIT), Jackson's 5-factor questionnaire for assessing personality, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) were administered to the two groups. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent t-test, analyses of variance (ANOVA), and multiple analyses of variance (MANOVA). Results: MANOVA results showed a significant difference between MDD and control groups in the items of Jackson's 5-items questionnaire. The MDD group score in r-BAS (P<0. 001, η 2=0. 242) was lower than that of the control group but was higher in r-BIS (P<0. 001, η 2=0. 367), Fight (P<0. 001, η 2=0. 245), Flight (P<0. 001, η 2=0. 068) and Freeze (P<0. 001, η 2=0. 081). Conclusion: Depression is significantly related to Behavioral inhibition system but not related to behavior activation system. A more knowledge of r-RST can help in the diagnosis, aberration and continuation of common mental disorders. The results of this study can help in understanding the pathology associated with the personality of patients with MDD.

Abstract:

The research purpose is to investigate the relationship between Behavioral activation system (BAS) and Behavioral inhibition system (BIS) with students’ capabilities and Behavioral disorders. Our statistical population included all the male and female students studying in junior high school and the first grade of high school in the school year ran from 2003-2004, out of which 600 students (288 boys and 312 girls) were selected using multi-stage sampling and the instruments employed were "Gary and Wilson Personality Questionnaire (GWPQ) and Goodman’s Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)" filling out self-report and parents-report forms.Findings indicated that anxiety disorders are positively, significantly correlated to Behavioral approach system, conduct disorder (CD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Overall, our findings also showed a statically significant relationship between Behavioral approach system in Gary and Wilson’s theory and students ‘capabilities.

Abstract:

The problem of girls’ running away from their homes has increased in the society in the recent years. It is one of the social problems, and controlling it requires strong management. But besides this factor, character attributes and personal motivation play a significant role in causing this problem. This study is of the retrospective type. Due to this, 120 subjects (60 runaway and 60 normal girls) were chosen. The runaway girls were chosen from among the girls within 11-30 age range, who were arrested in 1390-1391 by the police and handed over to Tabriz Social Emergency Center. The normal girls were equalized with runaway girls according to their age, level of education, and financial level. In this study, Carver and White’s activation/ inhibition Behavioral systems module was used. The results obtained from the findings in the research showed that there is a difference between the two groups of runaway and normal girls in Behavioral activation system and Behavioral inhibition system, and that both systems are more active in runaway girls. The difference between activation/inhibition Behavioral systems in runaway and normal girls is meaningful. The theoretical and research -based challenges in finding the character attributes have opened a new window to the questions the researches have thought about for decades. Due to this, the focus of the research is on studying the character attributes responsible for girls’ running away from their homes.

Abstract:

The Behavioral Approach system (BAS) dysregulation theory, proposed by Richard Depue and colleagues, is an integrated model for understanding the psychosocial and biological aspects of bipolar disorder. Yet, the expanded model of this theory provides even greater specificity in predictions, especially about the nature of BAS dysregulation, environmental factors, and psychological processes (e.g., appraisal processes) featured in a causal chain culminating in bipolar symptoms. The present study provides an overview of the expanded model, and elaborates on the revised factors in the model.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of personality dimensions on moral judgment according to the level of activity of the Behavioral activating system (BAS) and Behavioral inhibition system (BIS). Participants were male students in Kharazmi University who were selected based on their extreme scores in the Carver and White Personality Questionnaire and were assighined in four groups as follows: High Behavioral activating system (HBAS), low Behavioral activating system (LBAS), high Behavioral inhibition system (HBIS) and low Behavioral inhibition system (LBIS). Participants were assessed by personal and impersonal moral stories. Results showed that individuals with HBAS and HBIS in comparison with individals with LBIS obtained higher scores in both personal and impersonal moral judgment components. It seems that personality traits associated with BAS and BIS, which are respectively associated with positive and negative emotions lead to utilitarianism in personal and impersonal moral judgment.

Abstract:

The Behavioral Inhibition system (BIS) and Behavioral activation system (BAS) Scales (BIS/BASS) were developed by Carver and White (1) as self-report measures derived from the two Behavioral systems in Gray's theory (2,3). The purpose of the present study was to examine carry out Carver and White’s model with Shiraz university students. In order to this research, exploratory factor structure of the BIS/BASS was used. These scales were administrated to a sample of 188 students of Shiraz University. The reliability coefficient was estimated by two methods: test retest and Cronbach's alpha, which were both acceptable. Factor analysis was showed for 4 factors labeled as: Inhibition (BIS), Drive (BASD), Reward (BASR) and Fun seeking (BASF) which covered 47.98 percent of the total variance. The validity of these scales was investigated in two different ways: convergent validity and divergent validity. These validity indices were measured by two subscales of depression and anxiety from SCL-90-R. The correlation coefficient of subscale of BIS for depression was 0.22 while BIS for anxiety was 0.31. Thus, Carver and White’s model was normalized with the Iranians.
